It is used as a solvent, a passivating agent for catalysts, a pesticide intermediate, a coking inhibitor, and more. Dimethyl disulfide reacts with cresol to form 2-methyl-4-hydroxythioanisole, which then undergoes condensation with O,O-dimethyl phosphorochloridothioate in an alkaline medium to yield fenthion. Fenthion is a highly effective, low-toxicity organophosphorus insecticide that provides excellent control against rice stem borers, soybean pod borers, and cattle botfly larvae; it is also used in veterinary medicine to eliminate cattle grubs and cattle ticks.

The product is obtained by the reaction of dimethyl sulfate with sodium disulfide. Sulfur powder is added to a sodium sulfide solution under stirring, and the mixture is heated to 80–90°C and reacted for 1 hour before being cooled to approximately 30°C. Dimethyl sulfate is then added dropwise to the reactor, and the reaction is continued for 2 hours. Finally, the mixture undergoes distillation and is allowed to settle for phase separation; after the waste alkaline liquor is removed, the product is obtained through further distillation.
