Ethylene Glycol Dimethyl Ether (DME) is a clear, colorless liquid with a faint, pleasant odor. It is a glycol ether solvent with high solvency power for a wide range of organic compounds, polymers, and inorganic salts. DME is a versatile “aprotic” solvent, meaning it does not donate protons, making it particularly useful in reactions involving strong bases or organometallic reagents. It is miscible with water and most organic solvents, making it an ideal cosolvent in many applications.

6. Safety and Handling

Hazard Class: 3 (Flammable Liquid)
  • Precautions: DME is a highly flammable liquid and vapor. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. It can form explosive peroxides upon prolonged exposure to air and light. It is irritating to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system.
  • Handling: Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or PTFE), and a respirator if ventilation is inadequate. Do not use if the container is swollen or if peroxides are suspected.
  • First Aid: In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting; seek medical advice immediately.
